Summary

Transmission issues don’t always mean transmission malfunction. Often in-depth diagnosis reveals problems with other components that can make technicians believe the issues are transmission related. In this three-part series, ATSG experts will present case studies from their troubleshooting calls with professional technicians. Offering transmission diagnosis and repair support for shops, the Automatic Transmission Service Group encounters a broad spectrum of issues through its call center.

This series will highlight vehicle-specific problems that can help you troubleshoot issues in your bays, and help you realize some of those transmission issues aren’t faulty transmissions after all. Discussion will include:

Part 1 – August 21, 2024 | 1:00 PM EST / 12:00 PM CST | 1 hour duration

  • 2013 AUDI Q5 3.0L TDI WITH AN 0B5 TRANSMISSION – After repairs, overhaul or transmission exchange, the vehicle developed a U0101 code, indicating the network lost communication with the TCM.
  • 2016 NISSAN ALTIMA WITH AN RE0F10D CVT – After CVT install, the vehicle wouldn’t start.
  • 2016 NISSAN ALTIMA SEDAN L4-2.5L – Altima was brought into the shop for an intermittent stalling/cutting-out problem.
  • 2010 HYUNDAI SANTA FE – Oil leak at the bottom of the engine and transmission.
  • A 2010 GMC SIERRA 2500 – Second gear start was being commanded by the TCM and no codes were present.
  • CADILLAC XTS, ACADIA, ENCLAVE, OUTLOOK & TRAVERSE – Code U0101: indicating the network lost communication with the TCM.
  • 2018 CHEVY CAMARO SS WITH 6.2 LITER ENGINE & 8L90 – Slipping in forward at initial take-off, followed by a “no-move” condition.

  • 2007 TOYOTA CAMRY – P0328 Code with harsh 1-4 shifts and no shift into 5th or 6th
  • 2015-2016 HONDA FIT (1.5L – GTAA CVT) – Multiple DTCs.
  • 2018-2019 HONDA ODYSSEY WITH MNXA/PMXA 10 SPEED – Stuck in neutral mode.
  • 2014 NISSAN SENTRA WITH CVT 7 – RE0F11A -JF015E – 1-2 Flare shift feel complaint.
  • 2016 NISSAN SENTRA WITH CVT 7 RE0F11A -JF015E – False TCC slip code.
  • 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE – Setting code P0215C with coast downshift clunk.
  • 2014 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE WITH 845RE & JEEP CHEROKEE 948TE – Chatters in 1st, 2nd and 3rd
  • 2014 FIAT 500L 1.4L – Won’t move forward or in reverse.
  • 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE 3.2L WITH 948TE & FCA – Will not engage park with a harsh garage shift into gear from neutral.

PART 3 – October 16, 2024 | 1:00 PM EST / 12:00 PM CST | 1 hour duration

  • 2006 PATHFINDER – No start and communication issue after rebuild.
  • 2007 TOYOTA COROLLA WITH 245E TRANSMISSION – P0741 and a 2-3 flare along with B2799 immobilizer code.
  • 2011 TOYOTA CAMRY WITH U760E TRANSMISSION – Sets code P0715.
  • 2011 TOYOTA CAMRY WITH U760E TRANSMISSION – U0101 code after changing the TCM.
  • 2005 TUNDRA WITH 750F TRANSMISSION – TCC shudder complaint.
  • 2010 GRAND CARAVAN 3.8L WITH 62TE TRANSMISSION – Setting code P0882.
  • 2010 GRAND CARAVAN 3.8L WITH 62TE TRANSMISSION – Intermittent no start, may start in neutral and dash lights illuminated.
  • DODGE PROMASTER VAN – Vehicle design is problematic.
  • FORD TRANSIT VANS FROM 2015-2018 – Various trouble codes stored with drivability concerns, such as misfires, starting difficulty and an illuminated MIL.
  • 2013 FORD F250, 4WD AND A 6.7L DIESEL WITH 6R140 – Delayed engagement into reverse.

Wayne Colonna

Wayne Colonna began his career in the automatic transmission field 49 years ago. In January of 1991 he joined Automatic Transmission Service Group (ATSG) as a Technical Field Advisor. In 2001 he assumed the role of Technical Editor for Transmission Digest and was appointed President for ATSG. In 2018, ETE Reman purchased ATSG where Wayne functioned as ETE’s Director of Quality and now Technical Director while also serving as ATSG President.
